Top 6 Activities for the best day out in Solva, Pembrokeshire

Comments Off on Top 6 Activities for the best day out in Solva, Pembrokeshire

The last year has been hard on everyone and we know that you all deserve a break. That’s why we think you should go for a day out in Solva, a beautiful example of a Pembrokeshire fishing village only a few minutes drive north of Newgale Holidays and right on the doorstep of The Woodland Retreat. ‘What’s in Solva?’ you ask. Well, this gorgeous, historic fishing village with colourful fisherman’s houses, cobbled streets, and bobbing boats at the fantastic natural harbour has plenty of incredible and unique things to see and do. It’s the perfect place to take part in some interesting activities, taking in stunning views and sample delicious traditional produce.

Take a walk on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path

Whether you are a seasoned hiker or just want to give walking a go, Solva is the perfect place to start. Take a short stroll through Solva, maybe a walk or if you’re feeling brave go for a hike along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path along Solva’s narrow harbour spine, called The Gribin, with views of a secret beach tucked around the corner.

Whichever walk you decide to go on, make sure you take your camera with you to capture the idyllic fishing village. Walking is an amazing activity for your day out in Solva and it’s a great way to capture unique views of this pretty harbour.

Visit Solva Woolen Mill

Another activity for your day out in Solva is taking a trip to Solva Woolen Mill, where they specialise in making flat woven flooring using 100% British Wool. Visit the weaving shed and take a look at the 90-inch Dobcross looms and associated cone and bobbin winders. Currently, they use a warping mill that was built in 1899.

On-site they have renovated part of the building that used to store dye pots and fulling machines, it is now a lovely tearoom. The old mill building now houses the shop which sells beautiful high-quality products from around the British Isles, and a beautiful cafe serving cakes and light lunches.

Try some welshcakes at  MamGuWelshcakes

MamGu Welshcakes is the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat on your day out in Solva. You will always be met with a warm welsh welcome from the team. MamGu Welshcakes sell traditional and alternative welsh cakes and fresh Welsh food from the harbour village of Solva. Take a break at any time for a quick sweet snack or a lunchtime meal.

Take a dip in the sea

For an adrenaline rush, take a dip in the sea! Head down to the harbour at high tide for the best swim possible. And if you are feeling brave enough, ditch the wetsuit and just wear your swimmers. The cold water will boost your immune system, improve your circulation and give you a natural high, as cold water swimming activates your endorphins which makes you feel good.  Keep an eye out for the local swimming group, The Bluetits, who often swim in this stunning harbour.

Head down to Cafe on the Quay

Enjoy breakfast, lunch, or even just a snack on your day out in Solva at Cafe on the Quay. With a beautiful view of bobbing boats in the harbour and delicious, locally-caught food, what more could you want? They even stock crabbing equipment, nets, buckets, and even some smoked bacon bits to be used as bait.

Go Crabbing in the quay

All you need for a few hours of amusement is a crabbing line, a bucket, and some bait (we prefer smoked bacon bits and so do the crabs!). You can buy crabbing lines with no hooks that just have a weight and a bag for you to put bait in. A net can help you to get the crabs into your bucket from your line. Then all you need to do is fill your bucket up with some seawater and get started!
